[edit] Classroom Applications & Activities

This section is dedicated to developing the use of handhelds in education. Using Palm handhelds in a classroom can be intimidating at first, but with continued use, handhelds can be an integral part of your classroom. If you are beginning to use handhelds for the first time, keep it simple. Below are suggested activites to try with your class.

[edit] What To Do!

Try having students access the To Do List for weekly tasks that need to be done. You might be surprised at how much they will get done by being able to "check" it off the list. This activity will train students to use their Palm Handhelds on a daily basis in completing classroom tasks, activities, classwork and homework. As your students become more proficient with the To Do List, encourage them to add school-related tasks and beam them to others who share the task (i.e. - group work tasks). For the purpose of this activity, the term task will refer to an individual To Do item and the term To Do List will be used to refer to several tasks.

  • Create a weekly class To Do List on the teacher handheld (Feel free to set the priorities and due dates for each To Do item or allow students to edit the items if they are ready)
  • Using the Details button priortize the list (1=most important, 5=least important). Assign a due date for the task. If you are allowing students to set the due dates, set the due date for the end of the week by default. Encourage them to set the due date for earlier in the week.
  • Next, beam the To Do List task(s) to several students. Have these students then beam the list to three (3) other students until all handhelds have the To Do List
  • If you are allowing students to edit the tasks, they can now look at the list and decide which tasks are more important and should be completed first. Have them set a due date for themselves, however, remind them that all tasks need to be completed by the end of the week.
  • Using the Details button have students priortize their list (remind them that the Due Date should be set for the end of the week since the list will be used for the current week).
