There are a variety of chat clients out there. However the real goal of a chat is to connect people in two separate locations. If you have read The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman, one of his comments relates to antiquated technology. His point relating to the fact that in developing nations around the world they don't have to deal with technology that has come and gone. Think of the typical telephone in the United States.
