What is iTunes U? iTunes U is a free resource from Apple that allows educators to create a learning environment to engage students through iPads, Mobile Devices, Macs, and PCs. Educators and students have access to the world's leaning education institutions with over 500,000 lectures, videos, books, and other learning resources. In addition, educators can create an interactive learning experience that is directly aligned with curriculum.

iTunes U Course Manager

In order to create a course for iTunes U, educators must have an account in iTunes U Course Manager.

iTunes U Course Manager can be accessed in the following manner: Safari Browser on a Mac, Mozilla Firefox 12 on Mac or PC, Google Chrome 28 on Mac or PC.

Educators can access iTunes U Course Manager here: iTunes U. The log in for the course manager is the same as your iTunes account.

What Can I Add to iTunes U?

iTunes U allows for several types of resources to be organized in a particular iTunes U course.

You can add the following to an iTunes U course:

  • Documents
  • Video
  • Apps
  • Web Links
  • eBooks
  • Audio Files
  • Post
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Images


Getting Started

Course Administration

The course Admin panes display overall course administration information, including student enrollment and course setting details. Use the Admin panes to enable and manage student enrollment requests, edit course settings, and invite and manage course contributors. To access the Admin panes, click a course name in the dashboard and then click Admin.

When you make changes to your course, Course Manager immediately updates the course and students see the updates the next time they open the course.

You can use the course Admin Pane button panes to:

  • Enable course enrollment requests
  • View, approve, block, and manage course enrollment requests
  • Share your course enrollment code with others
  • Request a new enrollment code
  • Edit course settings (for example, your course name, short name, department, institution, image, and so on
  • Add, remove, and email course contributors
  • Update licensing information for your course


Step 1: Creating New Course

  1. Log into iTunes U Course Manager
  2. Fill out the profile information
  3. Make sure to include a brief bio and image
  4. If you do not want your image "public" find an appropriate icon
  5. Select the box Create New Course
  • Fill out all of the required fields
  • I select "all rights reserved" in the licensing field
  • Upload image
  • Click Save

The shell of your course is created!

Step #2 Course Outline

In order to add content to your course, you must create an outline that acts like a syllabus for your course. The outline can be edited, so do not worry if you need to add something at a later date.

  1. Click on Course Title
  2. Click on Outline
  3. Type or copy and paste course outline in text field and click enter to go to next slot of the outline
  4. You can indent by clicking on the right and left arrows at the bottom of the page
  5. You can Edit or Delete
  6. You can move the order by selecting and dragging the three lines to the left of the text
  7. Save Outline!

Step #3: Adding Material

Course Materials can be added in 2 different ways. 1) through a post or 2) pre-uploaded and then attached to a post
1 - Adding Content Through A Post

  1. Click on the Post button at the bottom of the iTunes U Course Page
  2. The outline will appear in the left hand column
  3. Click on the + sign in the upper right hand corner
  4. The Topic is the outline. You can click on the pulldown menu to change where the material appears
  5. Enter a Title
  6. Enter a Message (there are some editing features, therefore this can be learning content)
  7. Click on Add Assignment
  • Add a type of description - This SHOULD be an action such as LISTEN, READ, WATCH
  • Click on Attach Material
  • A menu will appear for you to upload material.
  • Select appropriate location of material
  • Store means iTunes Store
  • From My Materials means any material pre-uploaded


2 - Adding Pre-Loading Content in Materials Add Materials

  1. Click on the Materials button at the bottom of the screen
  2. Click on the + sign in the upper right hand corner
  3. Options will appear to add specific type of material
  • From My Computer
  • Search Store (iTunes Store)
  • iTunes or Web Link
  • From My Materials


This allows for materials to attached for all areas of the course

Organizing Course

When creating a course, you will want to follow your course outline and add action items such as READ, WATCH, LISTEN in the description areas. This will help students understand what is required by them.
Each outline "area" will allow numerous resources to be added. Therefore you will be able to create a unit type structure in order to add all of the resources for the units.

Previewing a Course

While creating, designing, and editing your private course, you can use the Admin | Enrollment roster pane to copy the course enrollment code and preview and test your course from a student's perspective on your iOS device (iPad, iPhone, or Computer).

Tip: When your course is ready, you can also use the Admin | Enrollment roster pane to share the course enrollment code with students and other users.

Hide To preview a course from the roster:

  1. Click the Students cell for your course in the dashboard.
  2. Click Enrollment in the Admin pane sidebar.
  3. Copy the course enrollment code. Request access to your course by entering the code in the iTunes U app on an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch), then preview and test your course from a student's perspective on your iOS device before sharing the course.

Note: Enroll codes are case-insensitive and dashes are not required.

New Features

Student Access

A very important fact to understand is that any Public course is viewable on PC, MAC, iPad, iPod, iPhone, etc. However! Private courses are only viewable on iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads.

When you are ready to share your private course, you can use the Admin | Enrollment roster button to share the course enrollment code with students and other users.

Tip: You can also use the Admin | Enrollment roster pane to copy the course enrollment code and preview and test your course from a student's perspective on your iOS device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch) before sharing the course with others.
Hide To share a course from the roster:

  1. Click the Students cell for your course in the dashboard.
  2. Click Enrollment in the Admin pane sidebar.
  3. Copy the course enrollment code. Share the course enrollment code with your students. Students request access by entering the code in the iTunes U app on an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, or Computer). After you approve a request, students can access the course using an Apple ID.

Note: Enroll codes are case-insensitive and dashes are not required.
